The 5 Self-Care Activities We’ve Found Most Useful For Stress

Whether it’s the general blues, going back to work or still feeling a bit drained after all the holiday festivities, we know that January can be a tough one.

That’s why we think this is the ideal time to indulge in some serious self-care over the weekend – something we think every guy should take more time out to do. Not sure how? Here are 5 ideas of how you can step back and put yourself first, even if only for half an hour each week.

 

1. Try to really relax

This is the perfect time to go all out with all those bath and shower bits your extended family have got you for Christmas. And hey, why not venture into your mums/girlfriends/partners drawers for a face mask, too? Trust us – good skin suits everyone. Candles, scrubs – you name it- run yourself a warm bath and grab your favourite book, listen to a podcast or watch your favourite show and forget everything that’s going on around you – even if it’s just for half an hour.

Extra tip: Throw your towels and bathrobe in the dryer beforehand, so they’re warm and soft when you get out. The ultimate chill.

 

2. Declutter your space

Let’s be honest – we all hang on to so many things that we don’t want (or need) anymore. Whether it’s clothes, books or even shoe boxes that you’ve sworn will come in use ‘one day’ but have merely sat collecting dust for years, take some time to go through your belongings and get rid of anything that doesn’t serve you purpose anymore. Try to find new homes for these items, give them to friends and family or donate them. You’ll feel lighter, happier and ready to take on the new year.

3. Get creative

Come on, guys. You can be creative too. This could really be anything – drawing, writing, doing a puzzle, upcycling furniture, or re-decorating your room – as long as it distracts you from your phone, laptop, or TV screen for a bit. Trust us, you’ll feel way more accomplished than after scrolling through Instagram all day (and you’ll probably sleep better, too).

 

4. Move your body

Workout options are limited at the moment, but trust us – moving your body will definitely make you feel better. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself to exercise, but simply put in some time to go on a long walk, have a decent stretch with an online yoga session or even kick a football around your garden or local park. We know that showing up can be the hardest part, but it will be worth it.

 

5. Treat yourself to some new dishes

We can all get in the rut of preparing the same few recipes over and over again (guilty), so why not treat yourself to something homemade that you usually wouldn’t make from scratch? Whether it’s all for yourself, a dinner for a loved one or a family feast, try baking homemade bread, making a new pasta dish or going for something entirely different to your usual.
